Painting as a Profession? How can I learn this?

Can I make paintings for a living?

Short answer: yes. Anything can make you a living; but if you want to make a living off of painting you’ll need a solid knowledge of materials and how to translate this knowledge to your work. Especially when you make ‘classic’ paintings, it’s not just enough to be good. There’s no nuance or possibility for other interpretations (you paint what you see, after all), so it’s important to follow the rules.

This also determines how people will view your art.

What separates a good painter from someone who paints for a living?

Even though creativity is the most important attribute when it comes to making a living off of something creative, you also have to make sure you are up to date and understand the different materials and techniques. If you want to paint for a living, you have to practice constantly! There’s no such thing as a ‘perfect’ artist, and everyone can use practice. Be proud of what you make, but give yourself useful constructive criticism!

How can I learn this?

There’s not really a course on how to make a living off of painting, but there are many painting courses. First of all, it’s important to choose which style you want to use; how do you want to translate your vision, and how do  you think your target market will view this. Make sure you don’t do anything haphazardly: painting is an intense job, and to learn the techniques you’ll have to put in the work.

We can help you get started by offering you a short, intense course, where you learn how old masters like Rembrandt and Da Vinci created their masterpieces. That way you’ll instantly know if this is up your alley or not!
